It's any essential oil or fragrance unit that holds 600 millilitres of liquid. That sounds simple, but the figure means two very different things depending on the type:
Most products sold as a 600ml aroma diffuser are the first kind: a large ultrasonic unit, often in wood grain, with colour-changing LED lights, a timer and a remote. Check which you're looking at before you buy, because a water tank and an oil bottle of the same size are used, priced and refilled in completely different ways.
The useful figure is how much water the diffuser turns into mist each hour. Manufacturers rarely print it, but you can work it out from the tank size and run time they quote:
So a 600ml essential oil diffuser running continuously at typical mist rates gives roughly 15 to 24 hours from one fill. An eight-hour night uses about 200-320ml, which leaves enough for the next evening. Most models also have an intermittent mode that mists on and off; because it only mists part of the time, a fill lasts noticeably longer than the continuous figure.
Waterless machines meter out tiny pulses of neat oil on a schedule, so they're measured in days, not hours. The Aromadd Smart Scent Air quotes up to 120 days from its bottle, an average of about 5ml a day. Your figure depends on how many hours a day it runs and how strong the setting is. Run times are estimates from the figures above, on continuous mist. Intermittent mode stretches all of them.
With a large tank you're more likely to leave it running and walk away, so make sure it switches off when the water runs out. The B&Q model does; the BAILEYU 300ml above doesn't list it, which is worth knowing.

Ultrasonic plates are near-silent. The Ankrs smart diffuser on Amazon UK, for example, quotes under 29dB. The bigger problem at night is usually the light, so check that the LEDs dim or switch off independently of the mist. If you'd like it to wake you too, an alarm clock diffuser combines the two.

Many large diffusers sold online are imported, and some Amazon UK reviewers of the Ankrs model report it arrived with a US plug. Check the listing says UK plug, or budget for a proper adapter.
A wide opening and a removable lid make the tank easier to wipe out. Don't leave water standing for days: empty it and refill with fresh water rather than topping up the old.
An ultrasonic diffuser of this size is a small humidifier as well. Run it overnight and a few hundred millilitres of water end up in the air of that room. In a dry, centrally heated house in winter that can feel pleasant. In a small, poorly ventilated bedroom that already gets condensation on the windows, it adds to the problem. If that sounds like your room, use the timer, leave a window on the vent setting, or choose a waterless model instead.
A diffuser doesn't filter the air. If you want cleaner air as well as scent, look at an air purifier diffuser, which combines a filter with an aroma pad or tray.
If you need scent across a whole floor or a business, look at a commercial scent machine instead.
A large tank can mist for many hours, so pets get far more exposure than from a quick burst. Several common oils, including tea tree, peppermint, eucalyptus and citrus, can be harmful to cats.
